60-second brief
This is a patient's family care inbox.
Loved One (by Sandwich) gives one private email address to a patient's designated family members so every sibling sees the same discharge summaries, pharmacy notices, EOBs, and appointment reminders — without asking you to install software or change your workflow.
Address on this patient's chart
Treat this exactly like a personal Gmail or MyChart proxy address. Add it as the alternate / secondary / family-contact email field on the patient's record. Replies to this address reach the family's shared inbox.
What you need to do
- Use the alternate-contact (or secondary email) field you already have on intake forms and in the EHR.
- Enter the
@lovedone.appaddress the family provided — or copy it from the box above when present. - Keep the patient's personal email if they still want it. Most families use this as a second contact, not a replacement.
Provider effort to start: zero new software. Going forward: one paste.
Who controls the data
The family controls who can read the inbox. Sandwich is the infrastructure (processor), not the decision-maker.
HIPAA posture
Under the HIPAA personal-representative doctrine (45 CFR §164.502(g)), a designated family member may receive PHI on the patient's behalf. Sending care communications to an address the patient (or their personal representative) provided is the same legal posture as emailing a MyChart proxy or a spouse listed on the intake form.
One-line summary: Treat this address exactly like a personal Gmail the family asked you to use.
